Mr. Prasad Dahapute is the Founder and Managing Director of Varhad Capital, he steers the team in sourcing and executing all types of transactions. He himself runs two Small Growing Businesses (SGBs) in financial services sector with hands on experience of 3 years. Overall, he has more than 13 years of experience in financial sector and served in various leadership roles.
In Social Impact and SGB area, he is running 2 SGBs with profit for past 3 years and also serves as the Financial Advisor to DICCI-SGB association of SC/ST entrepreneurs. In the past 3 years, he has sourced 15 SGB deals and executed 12 of them. In the process he has built strong relationships with 35 SGBs of which 10 are from deprived communities. Internally, he inspires the team and builds a strong socially responsible transaction team.
In impact space, he has executed 6 transactions that helped in creating employment for 3,600 poor in the state of Maharashtra, Odisha and Karnataka. He has been instrumental in raising INR220m for India’s first SEBI social impact fund viz. DICCI SME Fund. He has been instrumental in designing social strategies that can help large companies to implement social projects through CSR that can pull poor out of poverty. He has designed economic empowerment program for 100,000 women through 100 SGBs in India. He is also working on a pilot project with a large institution in USA on anti-poverty mission to raise 25,000 poor out of poverty through 25 SGBs.
Prior to setting up The Varhad Group, Mr. Dahapute was Head of Research at Proactive Universal Group (PUG) Securities. Before his role in PUG, he was Co-head of Equity Research at Standard Chartered, heading India equity research team independently. He was instrumental in getting mandates in private equity and joint ventures. He was also responsible for building research team after acquiring UTI securities. During his tenure in Standard Chartered, he increased research coverage at the rate of one company per week. Asiamoney rated him among top 30 equity analysts in India for three years in a row for 2007-09.
Before joining Standard Chartered, Mr. Dahapute has worked with HSBC as Utility Analyst for India, China and Korea. In this role, he was responsible for Utilities sector coverage in India and he covered metals and mining sector as additional responsibility. Before joining HSBC, he worked in Antique stockbroking as Senior Vice President Research.
Mr. Dahapute started his career at Power Finance Corporation (PFC), New Delhi in treasury (trading in fixed income derivatives) as well as credit assessment, where he was part of the team that raised INR90bn in domestic debt and USD500mn in Asia. He had vetted project finance of INR164bn during his tenure in PFC.He also developed internal credit rating system for state owned utilities and advised utilities as well as regulators on tariff setting as a consultant.
Mr. Dahapute holds an MBA from SIBM, Pune and BE-Mechanical from Government College of Engineering, Jalgaon. He is the top scorer in international markets and derivatives course during MBA and stood second rank in BE at the University. As a testimony to his leadership skills, he was elected asthe University representative of Government College of Engineering for two years.
