| The Indian highways, measuring up to 96, 000 kms, may well be on its way towards greener pastures. As Nitin Gadkari, Highways and Transport Minister of the Centre has reportedly asked his officials to make a plan of planting 200 crore trees along the 1, 00, 000 kilometre stretch of the National Highway. The government will employ 1, 000 contractors, who will have their own nurseries and be responsible for planting newer trees and making the highways greener. Trees will be planted in different regions based upon their soil and climate conditions. The national highways measure up to 1.7% of Indian roads, but carry 40% of its total traffic. Gadkari has said 1% of construction costs will be allotted for tree plantation and relevant things. The government is importing a technology from Canada to support these measures. He said, besides protecting the environment, this will contribute significantly in generating more employments.
